Fujiwara-kyo (694-710)
Fujiwara-kyo
The earliest imperial capitals were temporary structures which relocated on the death of the emperor. Then in 694 the first permanent capital was established at Fujiwara-kyo in present-day Nara Prefecture. Fujiwara was Japan's first capital to have its streets laid out in a grid pattern on the model of Chinese capital system and incorporated a walled palace.
