Asahi Shimbun is one of the top three national newspapers in Japan (the others being Yomiuri Shimbun and Mainichi Shimbun). In April 2004 it had a circulation of 8.27 million for its morning edition and 3.85 million for its evening edition, second only to Yomiuri Shimbun. It has international satellite edition publishing offices in London, Heerlen (Netherlands), New York, Los Angeles, Singapore and Hong Kong. The left-of-centre newspaper has alliances with the International Herald Tribune, with which it publishes the International Herald Tribune/Asahi Shimbun as its English edition.
