An agency of the Prime Minister's Office, the Department of Archives is charged with responsibility for keeping, caring for and making accessible major records of national significance. However, its activities are not yet supported by archival legislation, its facilities are inadequate, and training and equipment are urgently required to help it fulfil its role more effectively.
