The National Theatre, Bergen is Norway’s oldest permanent theatre with roots dating back to the Norwegian Theatre founded in 1850 by the famous Norwegian violinist, Ole Bull. It is home to the theatre company of the same name. From its inception, the theatre has always occupied a central position in the cultural life of Norway. A golden age many call attention to today is the 1930s, when Hans Jakob Nielsen was the theatre’s director. Many of the leading actors of Norway stepped into the limelight for the first time under his leadership. The National Theatre, Bergen premieres productions of, among others, Nordahl Grieg’s best dramas, all in keeping with the long traditions of a theatre where Ibsen and Bjørnson learned their craft and where Holberg had his ties to Norway. The theatre was also the only Norwegian theatre that escaped Nazification. Today the theatre presents some 15-18 different productions annually, including about 750 performances which play for to annual audience of over 120,000. Air-conditioned and heated, not usually available for hire.
The West Norwegian Opera is based at the National Theatre, Bergen.
