Rogaland Teater A/S was founded in 1947 and has since established itself as one of the leading regional theatres in Norway. The Theatre is the main performing venue in the region of Stavanger and a regional theatre for Rogaland County. The theatre is housed in a building from 1883 by architect Hartvig Sverdrup Eckhoff. The history of the theatre began during the years before World War II when several attempts were made to stage theatre performances in the building. However, despite the fact that many dramatic companies were founded, all of them ultimately failed due to lack of funding. Today the theatre employs 90 staff, 25 of whom are actors. The venue is well equipped with workshops and produces most of its scenery and settings in house. Annually Rogaland Theatre plays 12 production on three stages – Hovedscenen (main auditorium), Kjellerscenen and Intimscenen (black box theatre). Rogaland Theatre is particularly interested in programming for children and young adults and its children’s theatre is unique in Norway; actors are recruited from schools and kindergardens in Stavanger, meet once a week for various rehearsals and perform one main show annually, seen by an audience of 30,000. In 1997 Rogaland Theatre celebrated its 50th anniversary.
