Cirka TheatreCirka Theatre is a physical theatre company, the work of which includes different kinds of acting, pantomime and sometimes large physical settings for performances. In addition to using the ’traditional’ black box or a fixed stage, it also uses vast outdoor surroundings as its setting. Apart from performances at its home base, the Avantgarden Playhouse, Trondheim, the theatre group tours with performances for children and adults.
Cirka Theatre was established in 1984 in Trondheim, Norway by Anne Marit Sæther and Gilles Berger. They both have their background from mime and art schools in France. Jorunn Dugstad joined the group in 1996 as producer/administrator. Funded by both national and local governments since 1987, Cirka Theatre specialises in physical/visual theatre-based shows where the interplay between stage settings, scenery and physical language of the actors and dancers are central.
The company has played throughout Norway and has visited a variety of festivals both in Norway and abroad. In 1998 its performance Poste Restante was invited to represent Norway at the World Exhibition in Lisbon, and it has also been invited to festivals in Germany and Switzerland with its performance 'Split Second'.
Cirka Teater received three major Norwegian prices for the performance Poste Restante in 1997. In 1998 the company was commissioned to create the opening show for Oslo International Airport at Gardermoen, a show that involved some 40 actors and dancers and was broadcast directly on Norwegian Television.
It has had regular commissions from the national theatre, and the regional theatre in Trondheim. In 2002 it was asked by the Norwegian Government to create a street theatre show for the celebration of Princess Märtha’s wedding in Trondheim.
Cirka Theatre is located in an old factory at the harbour of Trondheim. In 2004 the company celebrated its 20th anniversary with an exhibition in the Trondheim Museum of Fine Arts and an out of doors event for the grand opening.
