The Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union (LPRYU) is a mass organisation tasked with guiding the country's youth under the Party's leadership and helping to educate and train young pioneers to be the driving force for the nation's future. Originating in 1955 as the Youth Combatant Association and now comprising some 311,000 active members aged 15-30 plus a further 882,000 non-members who are affiliated with the Union, the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union is a mass organisation dedicated to mobilising youth throughout the country with a view to contributing to national development, with a particular focus on the fields of information, media, entertainment, art and music. Operating at central, provincial/municipal, district and village level, the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union functions (i) to serve as the national arm of the party in educating youth on policy guidance, party resolutions and state law, the government's socio-economic development plan and congress resolutions and in further training young people to become good citizens; (ii) to strengthen the organisation of the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union Young Pioneers and Juveniles; (iii) to stimulate, monitor and supervise the implementation of congress resolutions and regulations of the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union, as well as adhering to the working style of the Lao Youth Board at various levels; (iv) to organise and inspect the activities of social youth organisations and provide advice and direction towards the development of new ideas, strengthening youth involvement in socio-economic development and keeping morale high among youth; (v) to organise income-generating activities designed to promote and protect youth welfare; (vi) to manage various projects, properties and funds provided by the party and state and to support activities ultimately aimed at further promting the welfare of young people; and (vii) to represent the youth board at all levels within the system and establish relations with various youth groups and international organisations, in order to gain support, assistance and co-operation, working along the guidelines set by party foreign policy. Youth organisations are set up at all levels, sectors and localities and the LPRYU also co-operates with foreign countries in a wide range of programme activities. LRPYU has a Print and Electronic Media Department which publishes Nok Hien Bin (Smallbird) Magazine and Noum Lao Newspaper and also makes television and radio programmes for young people. The Asia Foundation is currently supporting the LPRYU to videotape and broadcast their street drama series in four provinces that have high rates of migration. The videos educate the public on safe migration and prevention of human trafficking.
