Dundee City Council 1One of 32 local authorities. Dundee is Scotland's fourth-largest city with a population of 143,).
Situated on the River Tay, Dundee was a major whaling centre and was well-known for the weaving of linen and sailcloth. Polar explorer Captain Scott's ship Discovery, which was itself and adapted whaling ship, is berthed at Discovery Point. Dundee is often said to have grown to industrial strength through the three Js - jute, jam and journalism. In the early 19th century, it became the world's leading cultivator of jute and was dubbed 'Juteopolis'. Jam (in the form of Dundee Marmalade) was first made from Seville oranges in the late 18th century. Also based in the city is the D C Thomson publishing and newspaper empire, which created the well-known British comic book anti-hero Denis the Menace in The Beano. The Tay Railway Bridge (completed 1887) remains the longest in Europe. Dundee's modern economy includes biomedical research, oil-industry support, and high-technology manufacturing, and in recent years the city has begun to blaze a trail with its computer games industry.
